Formative Assessment in History:

Formative assessment is day to day on-going assessment as part of the repertoire of teaching strategies, based on how well pupils fulfil learning objectives, providing feedback and involving pupils in improving their learning.

Formative assessment is not one thing. It is a wealth of different strategies and products. It should include unexpected achievement and achievement beyond the National Curriculum.

Formative assessment includes the following strategies:

Planning:
Medium term plans were based on the QCA History scheme of work, unit 10 “What can we find out about Ancient Egypt from what has survived?”

Short term planning then provides a personal agenda for the week’s lessons. It enables certain day to day assessment judgements to be recorded in order to influence future planning and includes the following elements:

  • a breakdown of broad objectives to specific learning objectives
  • activities
  • organisation/differentiation
  • provision for SEN
  • use of other adults
  • rough time allocations
  • assessment notes

Sharing learning objectives with pupils (for every task):
Broad learning objectives are broken up into specific learning objectives in the short-term plan.

Broad objectives were based on Key Element 4: Historical Enquiry: ‘to select and record information relevant to the focus of the enquiry’(4b), using an appropriate range of resources,

e.g. books, pictures and the Internet (4a). Based on using and developing skills, the specific learning objectives were to be able to:
